Impact of COVID-19 on chronic kidney disease progression: a prospective cohort study

Chronic kidney disease and COVID-19 are both associated with significant morbidity. Patients with chronic kidney disease are at risk for severe COVID-19, and SARS-CoV-2 infection may accelerate CKD progression. This study aimed to compare renal outcomes in CKD patients with and without prior COVID-19 and to identify predictors of progression.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major and growing global public health problem, contributing to significant morbidity, mortality, and financial strain on healthcare systems. Despite available preventive measures, CKD often remains underdiagnosed and insufficiently addressed by health policies worldwide.

COVID-19, initially seen as a respiratory infection with mortality linked to respiratory failure, is now recognized as a multisystem disease, with acute kidney injury (AKI) evolving into chronic kidney disease (CKD); this study investigates AKI types and their prognostic value in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
